Nestled in the heart of Pittsburgh’s vibrant Lawrenceville neighborhood, Frankie's Extra Long stands as a beloved hot dog restaurant that feels like a cherished neighborhood treasure. Specializing in classic American fare with a focus on foot-long hot dogs and hearty sausage sandwiches, Frankie’s delivers a nostalgic yet consistently satisfying dining experience that honors Pittsburgh’s rich culinary heritage.
The menu at Frankie's is delightfully straightforward, but what it lacks in variety, it makes up with bold, robust flavors. Their Foot Long Hot Dog is a standout — perfectly grilled with just the right snap from the casing, nestled inside a soft bun that holds every delicious bite together. The Sausage Sandwich, another local favorite, boasts a juicy sausage that bursts with savory spices, delivering a punch of flavor that’s both comforting and addictive. For those craving a little extra indulgence, the Foot Long Chili Cheese Dog is a masterpiece, smothered in rich chili and creamy melted cheese that meld beautifully with the smoky hot dog beneath.
Dining at Frankie’s feels like stepping back to simpler times. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, perfectly suited for quick lunches or casual meet-ups with friends. Patrons often mention the friendly, smiling staff that make you feel genuinely valued and part of the neighborhood fabric, enhancing the overall experience beyond just the food.
Customer testimonials attest to Frankie’s enduring appeal. Andrew Duch praises their "very good hot sausage sandwich" and highlights the historic vibe that permeates the place. Longtime regular Jeffrey Rogosz shares a heartfelt connection, saying, “I love this place, been going there since I was a kid. Still good food.” You can feel the deep roots Frankie’s has in Pittsburgh’s food scene through these heartfelt stories.
While most reviews reflect consistent excellence, it’s important to note occasional concerns about service pace or food freshness, as expressed by Ken Bytheway. However, such moments seem to be rare exceptions in an otherwise solid reputation for delivering "great sandwiches" with "smiling faces," according to Ross F.
Overall, if you’re looking to indulge in authentic, no-fuss Pittsburgh-style hot dogs and sausage sandwiches crafted with care, Frankie's Extra Long is a must-visit. Its enduring legacy and passionate fan base make it more than just a meal — it’s a genuine slice of Pittsburgh’s savory soul.

I love this place been going there since I was a kid. Still good food
I have been goin to Frankie's Hot dogs for years I love this place yesterday I took a friend there who has never been there. He said it was the worst hot dog he ever ate I had to agree we got there about quarter after 2:00 and the hot dogs we got look like they've been sitting on the grill for 4 hours. The girl that was waiting on us had no hustle and left you with the impression that she didn't even want to be there
Great place great sandwiches always good to see smiling faces food is consistent small menu but everything is always wonderful. The food is amazing and you'll always be pleased.
It you like simple old-school to the point foods. This place is just that. It's been around since the 1940s, so I mean that should speak volumes. Grab and go or sit at eat. Either way, it's a must. Even if it's just to say you hit one of pittsburghs food spots. Tour guides charge people to take them here!. The only issue I had was that people were smoking at the bar area. That threw me off.
Just go there and make sure you have cash! My fiance loves this place. I had never experienced it until a little over a year ago but it’s worth going there. The service is amazing, the food is amazing too. You can dine in or take it to go. The choice is yours. The staff is always so nice too. Definitely try it if you are in the area. You won’t be disappointed.
